![]() It took a while for the narrative to gel, but the whodunit aspect involved the discovery of a list of names in a dead woman’s shoe. As wife number two, Kaya Scodelario provided us with some of the best scenes, popping pills as she piped the vol-au-vents, or stabbing a pillow in a rage before assuming her serene housewife act in time for supper. Easterbrook lived in a beautiful flat with a beautiful wife and drove a beautiful car – but there was plenty of ugliness beneath the surface. Sewell brought the perfect level of ambiguity to his character: he seemed charming and kind, yet cheated on his wife he expressed concern for others, yet fled the scene when he found his young girlfriend dead in her bed. The action took place in 1961 with Rufus Sewell playing the suave Mark Easterbrook, a widowed antiques dealer. But the Christie estate don’t mind – they have given Phelps their enthusiastic endorsement – and neither should we, because this was a stylish thriller in its own right. ![]() ![]() The Pale Horse (BBC One) is her fifth Christie adaptation for the BBC and most of it had only a passing acquaintance with the source material.
